The SCHEDULE

8am
Check-In

We will send details about room number and check-in location at the venue a week before your day with Hello Broadway Live.

8:30–9am
Welcome + Warmup

Welcome to Hello Broadway Live! We will make introductions, set intentions for the day, and then waste no time in getting our energy up for the day ahead.

9–10am
Dance Call

You will be immersed in Original Tony Award-Winning Broadway choreography. Don’t be fooled into thinking that singers get “mover combinations” at Broadway auditions–absolutely not! You will be pushed out of your comfort zone to learn at NYC speed so that you see the work that is ahead of you.

10–11am
Audition Workshop

Storytelling is the basis of Musical Theatre. Anyone can sing a high note. Anyone can get their leg up. The secret sauce is doing it while telling a story–and not letting the nerves take over. Through audition sides coaching and mock audition, we will get you ready to walk into any audition room with confidence.

11am–12pm
Vocal Masterclass

Booking the job is about nailing your 16-bar vocal audition. In this vocal performance masterclass, you will learn how to warm up your voice and what makes a great audition song. The best part? You will walk away with a new audition song, sheet music in hand, to bring into any audition with confidence.

11am–12pm
Parents Only Session

We know you have those questions that you don’t want to ask with your kid around.  Robert and his mother Elizabeth  will be with the parents for an hour to have an honest dialogue about the industry, New York City, and further education!

12–1pm
Student Sharecase Performance

Time to celebrate! Parents are invited back to watch a presentation of everything our students have learned together. This isn’t a “showcase” – our students have learned a new mindset to approaching the work. We call this “sharing your new starting point!”

1–2pm
Broadway Q&A

You have questions, we have experience to share! To end the day, we will all sit together and you’ll be able to ask our faculty questions about the business and their journey to where they are today.

He founded The Broadway Collective in 2016.

As a Director/Choreographer his work has been seen at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, North Carolina Theatre, and Fulton Theatre.  Most recently he directed and choreographed For Colored Boyz  and won the Fulton Theatre’s inaugural Stories of Diversity Playwriting Festival.

Robert has performed in 5 musicals on Broadway and 2 National Tours: Dreamgirls, Memphis, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Cinderella,  Motown, and Hello, Dolly! starring Bette Midler. He also stars in Pharrell and Jay-Z’s latest hit single – Entrepreneur – dancing in front of his iconic home.

Robert is a proud graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and The University of Michigan’s Musical Theatre department where he earned summa cum laude honors and the Willis Patterson Diversity Award.

Robert’s story of purchasing a 200-year-old colonial mansion (which was built back when slavery was still legal Federally in the US), went viral, reaching millions of people who were touched by his message of reinvention, liberation, and hope. As a Black gay man, he vowed to fill this home with love, honor his ancestors, tell their stories, and say their names.

In 2022, he launched the premier speaker training program for entrepreneurs to tell their stories – Strength On Stages.

When Robert isn’t telling stories and helping others do the same, he’s obsessing over NPR, his La Marzocco latte art, and dusting his 13 chandeliers.  He divides his time between New York City and his new home in Massachusetts.

If your child has dreams of working in Musical Theatre, then this is the place to be! The team at The Broadway Collective guides them and supports them by opening up opportunities to work with Broadway performers as well as receiving feedback. It’s hard work but SO worth it!”

–Maria, Parent

We were literally blown away not only by the professionalism of the team, but the incredible heart they bring to what they do. Robert has created a truly one-of-a-kind opportunity that will leave your child inspired to not only be a better performer but a better person.”

–Sarah, Parent

“What’s different about The Broadway Collective is their no BS training coupled with tough love, clarity of expectations, and the broader picture training on the work ethic it will take to succeed in this industry. I am legitimately ALWAYS inspired listening to Robert. I am often grateful to tears that these amazing humans share their gifts and talents with my child for no personal benefit, simply because it's their passion.”

–Julie, Parent

It was worth EVERY. PENNY. The difference in her confidence was ASTOUNDING. As in: is that my child up there? It really is worth the time and money if your child dreams of being on Broadway.”

–Traci, Parent

If you have the opportunity to participate...go for it! It's amazing! Your student likely will see new personal possibilities as a result. Robert Hartwell’s positive energy, continual encouragement, and attentive focus on each participant is shared by his colleagues and felt by everyone in the room. Beyond voice and dance, The Broadway Collective builds self-esteem, imparts life skills applicable to any future endeavor, and affords an opportunity to move beyond one's comfort zone–but all wrapped in the gifts of kindness and humilty.”

–David, Parent

The Broadway Collective allows you the opportunity to work with professionals who are in the trenches. They have expert knowledge on what producers, directors and choreographers look for in an artist. Once you gain that experience and sit at the feet of these talents, no one can take that away. That’s the magic in it all, and The Broadway Collective has that secret sauce!”
